DescriptionJulia Maurer´s paintings depict subjectivity at the core of its most sincere identity crisis. Here, in this almost voyeuristic scope, caught between a shame and irrational fear, the characters are stripped bare in their hopelessness, their emotional alienation, their troubled state of despair over a non-identified loss ot damage. Sometimes grotesque, often incomplete, as if archaic, they mercilessly perform the solitude and isolation of their characters in an uncanny landscape of soul which does not belong. Julia Maurer paints the architecture of the uncanny suspended between the familiar of everyday surrounding and estranged of unknown and enigmatic territory, a stage for tormented feelings of aroused intensity, a house of dreams and desires, awaiting its fulfillment, but rather condemned to failure and oblivion. Here too, the mysterious takes over, and, together with a devastating sense of absence and emptiness, continues the plot of an almost detective story: in their provocative suggestiveness, between erasure and overt manifestation, one may read Maurer´s small-format paintings as bodies of evidence, documents of crime, real or imaginative, where omnipresent psychological transgressions, wounds and traumas are disturbing proofs of physical and psychic violence. Reduced, ascetic colour palette and almost naive and sublime painterly style execute anonymous „typical“ characters and the most banal, almost iconic housing architecture with a radically objective coldness, but also with a convincing personal truth of an inner experience.Adam Budak, Joanneum Graz, in „waking doubting rolling shining and musing- improvisation of a faun, or on precarious life“- Academy of fine
