DescriptionGressl’s work is characterized by abstract, dynamic motifs, often rendered in red, white, blue, yellow, and black, colors that lend a sense of recognizability to his compositions. Nonetheless, the artist stresses that while his style demonstrates consistent preferences in form and color, one must be prepared, as he notes, “to create something that is governed by rules without becoming a rule itself”.Ohne Titel (Untitled) is exemplary of the artist’s sentiments. Here, the central bands of aggressive colors — red and yellow — insist on gripping the viewer’s attention, at least initially. The contrasting axes of a calming blue and a bold black, however, reinforce the guiding of one’s gaze elsewhere in the composition, revealing a subtle blending of the otherwise rigid color bands into light blues, greys and varying tonalities of white. The harmonious juxtaposition of color blocks lends a refined sense of orchestration to the otherwise rigid forms portrayed within the composition.
